I have wanted to live on the Oregon Coast since going to Oregon repeatedly as a small boy to visit Grandparents. My wife and I have vacationed there many times and she has come to love it as much as I do. Travelling there was easy before I sold my airplane. We could leave after the close of business on a Friday, land at one of the small airports along the Coast, fly back Sunday night, and be ready for work Monday morning. Now, instead of four-hour flights there is a two-day drive each way, so a two-day stay is a six-day trip.
We have talked about moving there permanently many times over the years and finally decided to do it. We spent the past week finding a home that has an ocean view, space for my server farm, and that is located where high-speed commercial Internet access is available (that combination wasn't easy to find). I am now busy setting-up a new duplicate set of servers that can be left running here while I move and reinstall the ones currently being used here in Utah in Oregon.
Our new place is at the top of a 250-foot hill overlooking Yaquina Bay in Newport. It was custom-designed and oriented to provide ocean views from every room. There is a large waterproof outdoor deck facing the Bay and a patio below where we can play flamenco when you come to visit. This photo was taken from that patio.
If everything goes as planned the Old School Flamenco Forum will continue to run seamlessly through the transition. I am able to remotely administer the servers from my car while en route except for a few short gaps along the way where mobile internet service isn't available. Of course, hardware failures generally can't be fixed remotely, but unless internet connectivity is lost it is sometimes possible to even work around hardware problems by remotely reconfiguring to use standby equipment.
I expect to have the new servers ready for temporary use here in Utah by mid-week. As soon as they are ready I will switch to them and start moving the main ones. It probably will be a couple weeks before websites are being served from Oregon. If everything doesn't go as planned the Forum could temporarily go down. If that happens you can be sure I will be working to fix the problem and restore service ASAP, because lots of websites and other Internet services will be down.
Don't forget to make travel plans to come and share a bottle of wine while playing flamenco on our new deck or patio!
