Moving to the Oregon Coast

Postby admin » 09 Oct 2011, 15:30

I have wanted to live on the Oregon Coast since going to Oregon repeatedly as a small boy to visit Grandparents. My wife and I have vacationed there many times and she has come to love it as much as I do. Travelling there was easy before I sold my airplane. We could leave after the close of business on a Friday, land at one of the small airports along the Coast, fly back Sunday night, and be ready for work Monday morning. Now, instead of four-hour flights there is a two-day drive each way, so a two-day stay is a six-day trip.

We have talked about moving there permanently many times over the years and finally decided to do it. We spent the past week finding a home that has an ocean view, space for my server farm, and that is located where high-speed commercial Internet access is available (that combination wasn't easy to find). I am now busy setting-up a new duplicate set of servers that can be left running here while I move and reinstall the ones currently being used here in Utah in Oregon.

Our new place is at the top of a 250-foot hill overlooking Yaquina Bay in Newport. It was custom-designed and oriented to provide ocean views from every room. There is a large waterproof outdoor deck facing the Bay and a patio below where we can play flamenco when you come to visit. This photo was taken from that patio.

If everything goes as planned the Old School Flamenco Forum will continue to run seamlessly through the transition. I am able to remotely administer the servers from my car while en route except for a few short gaps along the way where mobile internet service isn't available. Of course, hardware failures generally can't be fixed remotely, but unless internet connectivity is lost it is sometimes possible to even work around hardware problems by remotely reconfiguring to use standby equipment.

I expect to have the new servers ready for temporary use here in Utah by mid-week. As soon as they are ready I will switch to them and start moving the main ones. It probably will be a couple weeks before websites are being served from Oregon. If everything doesn't go as planned the Forum could temporarily go down. If that happens you can be sure I will be working to fix the problem and restore service ASAP, because lots of websites and other Internet services will be down.

Don't forget to make travel plans to come and share a bottle of wine while playing flamenco on our new deck or patio!

That is great news Bob and hope someday my health will allow me to travel to the coast again. This year hasn't been a good one, but hoping for better next year. Sounds like a nice place you found and Newport is a good area. Looking forward to visiting maybe next spring depending on health and economy.

Health sometimes changes unpredictably as the weather sometimes does when it is the opposite of what we expect. A few days ago local forecasters were saying skies would be clear with a warming trend this week, but the temperature has declined and it is raining outside. Even though his year hasn't been so good for you and your doctors don't know a cure there is still a lot that isn't known about the human body and there could be a solid base for optimism that isn't known yet. I will be looking forward to seeing you and other forum members in Newport.

Hola Bob

This is a wonderful photograph.
When someone manages to achieve what they have wanted for long time it gives a sense of optimism and happiness as if it is saying : yes we can get to where we want to get, both geographically and in life in general.
Be happy and enjoy you beautiful view and surroundings.
If I ever get to the USA I will be sure to let you know.

Saludos cordiales

We will be back from time to time to visit family and friends and I am sure you must be in need of an Oregon vacation.

The forum has been transferred over to the temporary 64bit Linux server that it will run on while the main servers are being moved. All seems to be well, but I haven't tested carefully, so there could be a problem or two that I haven't noticed.

The Old School Flamenco Forum is now being served from Newport, Oregon. My "server farm" was loaded into the rental truck shown in the cell phone photo below twelve days ago, my guitars were put into my Lexus, and my wife and I spent the next two days driving those vehicles here to Newport. She flew back to find a renter for our Utah home and to oversee the moving of our household furnishings by professional movers. I stayed here to install and bring the servers online.

The servers have been running online here for a few days and I have been gradually moving websites, SQL database services, mail services, media services, and DNS services from the temporary backup servers left running in Utah to the primary servers that are now here. I moved this forum here earlier today.

Since our household furnishings are still in Utah, my dinning room table is a computer desk and my chair is a folding canvas camp chair. Furthermore, since none of you showed up, I have had to sit here alone by the fireplace playing guitar.
