Pending Foro Software Upgrades

Postby admin » 24 Sep 2009, 02:12

Over the next couple days I will be installing a series of important Foro software security upgrades. It will be necessary to take the Foro off-line periodically several times while various components of those upgrades are being installed. Please don't be concerned that it has gone away if you find it down. Just check back a little later and you probably will find it running again.

As of late Thursday evening about 80-percent of the Foro software upgrades have been completed. I expect to complete the rest tomorrow.

Most of the improvements relate to security, but hundreds of minor bug fixes and operational improvements also are being made. Most of them won't be noticed by most users, because they are important only in situations most users don't encounter, such as where someone is using one of the less-popular web-browsers, is trying to download a file via a particular type of proxy server, or some other such thing; but some changes are more obvious. For example, the first few words from the subject-line of the most recent post to each forum now displays in the right-hand column on the index page (the home page) and the number of minutes since recent posts were made now displays at the top of new posts.

The forum software upgrades are now fully installed and the forum should be back in normal operation. Of course there always is a risk of malfunctions after major changes. Let me know if you notice anything that seems to be abnormal.

I discovered a rather serious database error after posting the message above, so despite what I wrote in that message, the forum is not yet back in normal operation.

That database problem has been corrected. Hopefully the forum is now running normally. Let me know if you have any problems.

I would also like to express my thanks to Bob. I don't post very often, but I read what others post almost everyday and appreciate having this service available.

It was necessary to take the forum off-line for about five minutes this morning to allow installation of another security update. The forum is now back in normal operation.

While troubleshooting an unrelated server software problem this morning I discovered that a security update installed on October 3rd has been causing an error message to display in old versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox. That problem has been corrected.

Please let me know whenever you notice problems like that, because some problems are unique to particular web browser and computer operating system versions and I may not see them.
