'Flamenco Tradicional' by Ian Davies

Postby lapaz » 17 Jun 2010, 19:07

hello All,

I am a flamenco guitarist student, living in a small village in the north of Friesland in the Netherlands. I started to accompagny my wife and daughter (9 years old) during their flamenco dance lessons with my guitar ones a week. My son (8 years old) also plays guitar and helps me to accompagny the Sevillanas dance, he is doing quite well!

I hope, somebody here could help me finding some books from the famous - London - English - flamenco guitarist, Ian Davies. He died some years and because his peak / famous period was around the 80/90s not much traces of his music is left.

In the early 90-ies, I had flamenco guitar lessons for some years in Groningen, a nice place in the North here. At that time I bought some books (3 from the 9...) from Ian Davies book serie named ' Flamenco Tradicional' I only bought the first 3. Due to a shoulder injury I stopped playing for some years. Lately, I re-discovered the Davies books, I like them a lot because of its pure / tradicional character. Since this serie is no longer for sale, I have to find the missing volumes via other flamenco guitarists. Two weeks ago Dutch flamenco guitarist helped me out with the 4th volume, which was (more than) great. But he told me as well that the other, higher numbers of this serie, would be more difficult to get. I hope to be among other Ian Davies fans here, helping me to find the following missing volumes:

vol 5: Tientos / Malaguenas
vol 6: Buleria en la / Fandangos !
vol 7: Alegrias por medio / Sevillanas 2
vol 8: Farruca / Tarantas
vol 9: Soleares por medio / Peteneras

the publisher was 'Harpocean Limited Ltd', London (which no longer exists :-( ).

I really wonder where / who still has them, the www seems to have missed them, because the books are from the 80s?! It would be really really great to have the serie complete!

All the best! Peer

By the way, my favorite record (from the 60s/70s?!) is from 'Rafael Moreno' named 'Cante Flamenco', guitarists: Andres Heredia and Rafael Heredia. For me this record contains the raw/pure flamenco I like!

Welcome to the forum. I can't help you with the Ian Davies "Flamenco Tradicional" volumes, but I have standard notation (no cifra) for an Ian Davies "Bulerias por Medio" if that is of interest to you.

I am not familiar with Rafael Moreno's "Cante Flamenco," but I have Rafael Molero's "Fiesta En Espana" album which has some great traditional flamenco guitar playing and when I first quickly read your post I misread Moreno as Molero and thought you were commenting about a recording that included him.

hello Bob,

thanks for your reply! I already have the 'Buleria por Medio', actually was playing that one today! I think it's part of Davies 'Flamenco Tradicional' volume 2.

I have to correct the title of Rafael Romero's record, I mentioned, it's named 'Cante Gitano'..... do you have a reference for this Romelo?

"Romero" was spelled "Moreno" in your first post. I have a considerable number of Rafael Romero recordings, but not his "Cante Gitano."

"Fiesta en Espana" is a vinyl LP recording that was released in 1957. Rafeal Molero is the sole guitarist on all the cuts. The recording company was "Audio Fidelity." I doubt that the disk is still commercially available, but it might be possible to find a used copy somewhere. Anyone who enjoys traditional flamenco would like it.

The cuts are:

Side a-1 : Alegrias
Side a-2 : Sevillanas
Side a-3 : Farruca
Side a-4 : Elegia a Monolete
Side a-5 : Granainas
Side a-6 : Por Alegrias
Side b-1 : Zapateado Tanguillo
Side b-2 : Por Soleares
Side b-3 : Ojos Verdes
Side b-4 : Dolores La Petenera
Side b-5 : Por Seguirias
Side b-6 : Fandango

I have posted the Por Seguirias here as a sample of the record album contents with the belief that it is not subject to copyright protection. It will be removed immediately if a copyright owner notifies me otherwise.
