HELP! NAIL FILE. This is not about shaping nails.

Postby Prominent Critic » 15 Dec 2009, 19:39

HELP! This is not about nails – this is about nail files. For the past thirty years or more, I have always used just one kind of nail file – an ordinary cheap file five inches long, made of stainless steel, with a triple cross-cut pattern. Nothing else works for me – emory boards, these sandpaper finish type of metal files, glass, nothing. For me anyway, those things don't file a nail, all they do is smooth a nail. But as your nails grow too long they have to be filed back down to the right length, and – at least for me – only the metal cross-cut file actually files the length down. Mind you, these are just ordinary, inexpensive nail files that cost about two dollars or less, that must have been made and sold for fifty years. But now, suddenly, they have completely disappeared. Nobody makes them anymore. There were three companies that made them – the best was Revlon, then also LaCross, and Trim. Gone! I am left with one old file that I'm clinging to, and I am desperate. To the average person in the street this might seem preposterous, but I am sure that everyone on this site understands how dire this is. Does anyone know of any place that still might have and sell any of those files? Stainless steel, triple cross cut, five inches long, comes to a point on the end. If anyone has a spare one – I don't care if it's used – I would be happy to buy it and pay for mailing. I can pay in cash, or I'll write you two brand new falsetas in any toque of your choice and mail them to you. Or both. Thanks for any help. Many members of this forum live in other countries, so possibly it's still available elsewhere.

Thanks for the idea, Victor. I just tried the web, and have found some that seem to fit the description. I'll take a chance on a few blind, and hope for the best. I only need to find one that works, and if I do I'll just send for a bunch more, and that will hold me for a long time, since really I have found that one of them lasts for years. After all, it's metal vs. nail - the metal isn't going to wear out from nails.

Thanks Tomas -

If by any chance you find any, I'll reimburse you. Or I'll send you sheet music for my flamenco version of "Three Blind Mice," played all with tremolo.

Girl, I could have written this post myself. I, too, am holding onto my last good ol' metal, triple cut nail file. I have searched high and low, but can't find them anywhere. Revlon is also my favorite. Have you had any luck in finding any?

Actually, I'm not a girl, unless that was just a "term" like from a pop song or something. Unfortunately, I have had no luck. I'm very happy to see that someone else understands what I'm talking about. Nothing else works for me. Emory boards are totally useless, as are emory board type metal files. Forget about those preposterous glass files. Sapphire does nothing. Absolutely nothing else works. Here's the difference. ALL of those other things can SMOOTH a nail, but they cannot FILE IT DOWN, or SHAPE IT. If anyone can reduce size or shape with those other things, all I can say is good luck - I have no idea how you do it. If I ever find what we're looking for, I'll definitely let you know. It's really ridiculous. These work better than anything else, and they used to cost two dollars. EVERYONE stopped making them at the same time. It's a conspiracy - that's what it is! The President of Revlon probably got jilted by a woman who was a classical guitarist, and he is exacting his revenge. And we have to pay the price.
