Jose Romero Flamenco Piano

Postby Prominent Critic » 27 Jan 2010, 05:40

I have been trying for many years to find some recordings of flamenco piano by Jose Romero, but unsuccessfully. Does anyone by any chance know where to find any. Unfortunately they're all out of print.

If anyone has any I would sell my soul for even audio tapes made from the recordings. There are at least four records that I think have mostly solo versions of the traditional palos. The titles are as follows:

José Romero:
"Piano Flamenco" (Out of print)
"Andalucía flamenca" (Out of print)
"Formas musicales andaluzas" (Out of print)
"Fantasía suite andaluza iberoamericana" (Out of print)

I will happily pay for tapes by creating ten new falsetas for you in any palos of your choice, guaranteed original, and in Old School style.

P.S. I have no interest in any of todays flamenco pianists. They all are exactly like today's "flamenco" guitarists – they're playing pseudo flamenco with falsetas that bear no relation to the palos they purport to be.

I have a huge large library of old flamenco recordings. I don't remember Jose Romero Flamenco Piano, but it is possible that I have what you are looking for. I am about ready for bed tonight, but will I see what I can find tomorrow.

Thanks Bob –

The other pianist of course would be Arturo Pavon, but he was mostly an accompanist, and I don't know if he made any solo recordings, but if he ever did I would kill for those as well. Or maybe some other old time flamenco pianist who played traditional flamenco, but I'm sure there weren't very many. I did recently buy a CD by Arturo Pavon, but it was – as I suspected – simply orchestral music. I had hoped that maybe he would have interspersed a few bits of solo, but no such luck. Anyway thanks for looking.

Thank you Sam!
I never thought I would ever actually be able to watch Arturo Pavon. That whole sequence with Melchor is fantastic. It really shows that piano can be flamenco in the right hands. Incidentally, there is a flock of Pavon recordings right there on YouTube that came up when I played your clip. All audio unfortunately.

That soleares on piano is really good – a legitimate soleares. Unlike other "flamenco" pianists I have heard playing "Soleares," where if it didn't say what they were supposed to be playing you wouldn't even know it was Soleares.

Well, I had a little success. I wasn't able to find any Jose Romero flamenco piano albums, but I did find a couple of solo recordings that are posted here with the belief that they are not subject to copyright protection. They will be removed immediately if a copyright owner notifies me otherwise.

Wow! Thank you Bob!.

All these years I had heard and read so much about Jose Romero, but have never been able to hear a single note. It was worth the wait. What playing – pure flamenco, as flamenco as any guitarist. You only have to listen to any modern day flamenco pianist playing their gibberish to appreciate the contrast. Anyone who thinks that things necessarily get better over time should try listening to this.

I will continue my long quest for his records. I even found a website devoted to Jose Romero, and tried writing – in Spanish – to inquire about maybe even tapes from his records, but got no reply. Here is the website.

In translation - a pretty bad one.

Here it is in Spanish if you prefer –

Maybe some interested member can also try.

I would love to hear him play other palos like Granadinas, Alegrias, Farruca, and I can only imagine what he would do with Siguiriyas.

Thanks again Bob.
