Remembering your pieces

Postby flyeogh » 07 Aug 2009, 08:16

In my short (5 years on and off ) guitar playing career (sounds grand but I only play for myself and occassionally a little Sevillanas for my 6 year old niece) I have probably tried about 30 pieces from about 8 palos.

Some have got extended by adding falsetas which probably don't sit to comfortably side by side but they allow me to incrementally move on :)

But having just returned from Spain, got my guitar into action again, I realise I can only play about 6 pieces that amount to about 15 minutes playing. (And I have never played any other genres on guitar so this is truely my lot)

Yesterday I remembered a nice short simple Martin alegrias and then realised having not played it for a year that it had gone. Odd notes strung together but it was lost. I remember I had worked hard on that for months

Just wondered how many or how much other hobbyist players retain? (perhaps my memory is going :x )

Nigel you are ahead of me! 6 pieces and 15 minutes has me crying uncle. I cannot even remember how to play the Taranta I put together and recorded. I did not write down any tab and it was all improvisational based on Diego del Gastor, so I may never remember what I did in places. I have been playing fairly regularly for the last 6 years after a nearly a 30 year break from guitar. I made a living from playing, teaching, and repairing flamenco and classical guitars for a few years in my twenties. I have been working on my Alegrias and Bulerias during any time I could find to practice this summer and tried playing some other palos yesterday and couldn't remember falsetas I have played several hundred times. I use to play 8 different Sevillanas without thinking ... now I can only remember one of them. I could play over 100 Solea falsetas ... now maybe 10. I do not think my memory is going ... I think it already left the building.

i think it's okay to forget. maybe that's why the pros never play the same thing exactly the same twice. i try to learn one falsetta a day but it's very tough. i think i'll just try to remember the gist of things and improvise from now on.
