Hi;
Yes, it is definitely too bad that I couldn't be there for the festival. As it was I had some luck. I met up with a friend of a friend who is a local dancer and she took me to the Pena de la Buleria for a very interesting performance. It was a group of four Japanese dancers and a Japanese guitarist who were making their debut on the stage in Jerez. All were extremely good. There were two local singers (male and female) and a local guitarist. All were superb and really pushed the dancers along. The room was packed and the audience was extremely supportive and also worked hard to drive the dancers along.
I found a really great small hotel right beside the location for the eventual Ciudad del Flamenco. A short walk away I did a wonderful tasting at a small bodega
http://www.bodegastradicion.es/The weather was chilly and wet, but it was a great first exposure to Jerez.
Since I got back I've been on the road again, so apologies for slow followup.
