Visiting Jerez next week--suggestions?

Postby byron » 12 Jan 2011, 21:39

I'm going to be visiting Jerez for the first time, about 10 days from now. I can only add on a three-day weekend at the end of a business trip, so it won't be long. Any suggestions on where I should go for flamenco on a Sat/Sun/Mon night? Good restaurants?

I'm staying at a small hotel that's quite central on Calle del Barranco

It has been a long time since I was in Jerez and things change, but Damajuana Cafe Bar in the historic center of Jerez at c/francos nº, 18, sometimes has live flamenco and might be worth checking out.

Thanks, Bob. I'll do that. And I'll give you an update when I get back.

I've also probably got a free evening Monday or Tuesday in Madrid, if I'm not too jet-lagged to go out.

Too bad you won't be there between February 25th and March 12th so you could see some great flamenco dancing at the Festival de Jerez 2011.

It wasn't me who went. It was Bryon.

Hi;
Yes, it is definitely too bad that I couldn't be there for the festival. As it was I had some luck. I met up with a friend of a friend who is a local dancer and she took me to the Pena de la Buleria for a very interesting performance. It was a group of four Japanese dancers and a Japanese guitarist who were making their debut on the stage in Jerez. All were extremely good. There were two local singers (male and female) and a local guitarist. All were superb and really pushed the dancers along. The room was packed and the audience was extremely supportive and also worked hard to drive the dancers along.

I found a really great small hotel right beside the location for the eventual Ciudad del Flamenco. A short walk away I did a wonderful tasting at a small bodega http://www.bodegastradicion.es/

The weather was chilly and wet, but it was a great first exposure to Jerez.

Since I got back I've been on the road again, so apologies for slow followup.
