1972 Tuarus luthier-edition model 56

Postby simonminchom » 18 Oct 2009, 20:09

Vintage 1972 Taurus luther-edition model 56, it's the second top of the line model in the Taurus luthier range behind the model 60.

The only other one I've seen for sale was a model 60 selling for 3000USD about ten years ago.

Made in 1972 in Barcelona, of the Madrid style, this is the second-top of the line made by the Taurus workshop. I have been in contact with Antonio Picado of Guitarras Picado (http://www.guitarraspicado.com/) and it was most likely made by either him, or Jose Ramirez.

650mm with a 52mm nut, this was constructed by hand with indian rosewood back and sides, spruce top, ebony fingerboard, mahogony neck, beautiful mosaic inlays around the sound hole and bridge. Includes the original hard case.

How much are you asking for it? Where are you located?

I am not set on a price yet, I still have two luthiers to consult, but I'd imagine around $3000.
I am located in Montréal Quebéc.

Perhaps I can shed more light on this guitar. The Taurus guitar factory in Barcelona made some the student models for Ramirez during the mid to late 60's and into the 80's. Antonio Picado Berga worked for the factory from 1968-1982 and made many of the "luthier" models for Ramirez. The same model guitar back then would sell as a student Ramirez for more than it did with the Taurus label. Student Ramirez models from that period bring $800 to $2000 in today's market. The Taurus labeled ones can bring whatever the buyer is willing to pay. The guitar was probably made by Berga. Definitely not Jose Ramirez or anyone in his workshop in Madrid. The luthier models of Taurus sold in Barcelona back then for $150-$185 and the few that hit the states brought maybe $250. I had a student back in 1973 that had the Model 60 she had bought in Barcelona new for $165. Even though these were called "luthier" models they were not hand made by a single luthier. They would be select models that were examined, special set up, and had to meet the standards of the luthier in charge which was probably Berga, but still factory made guitars. Generally the best ones were sold to Ramirez.

So what would be a ballpark price range?

It all depends on condition. I have seen them on the internet for sale from $300 to $2000. I have no idea if they sold or not for that. It might be worth more to a collector than a player. Google Taurus model 56 1972 and see what you can find out. Also some of the big dealers might be able to give you an idea. Give them a call.

Also it is very important to point out that this is a classical guitar, NOT flamenco.
