Rafael Marin - Método de guitarra, Aires Andaluces

Postby dformell » 18 Jan 2011, 18:20

Hello Everybody,

Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of Rafael Marin's Flamenco Guitar Method? It would be nice to translate Mr. Marin's work into English, digitize it and make it available in Spanish/English, for free, on the web. I have a translator, I just need a copy Mr. Marin's book. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Dan

Hola Amigos

OK everyone is going to hate me here but.......

If it was Miguel de Cervantes this could not be done without prior permission and money being paid.

My question is should our work be available for free or should people have to pay for our labour?

Saludos cordiales

Tomas,

Nobody hates you for what you think and you are quite correct, artists should be paid for their labor. With regards to Mr. Marin's work, it's of public domain. Even though companies like amazon offer a service where they will digitize an out-of-print work and sell it through their website for a commission, authors and publishers alike aren't using it. I tried to obtain a copy of Mr. Marin's work through traditional means and ran into a road block at every turn: contacted Editions La Posada, no response; The Spanish National Library, no response; The esteemed scholar Dr. Rioja through the Arte Pulsado forum, no response. The aforementioned were communicated to in Spanish. Furthermore a copy of Aires Andaluces, without the metodo, was found through the IGRA (International Guitar Research Archive). Originally it was supposed to be copied to a CD but after I paid the IGRA $66.00 I was told that they couldn't do a CD at this time and instead was sent a scanned copy of horrible quality. The original post is over a year old and wasn't done in vain as a member of this forum has graciously sent me a copy, ironically obtained from the Spanish National Library some years ago. We are at a point in time where traditional venues are to slow and stuck in the past. So we are going forward without them.

Hello Everybody,

A copy of Metodo de Guitarra has been obtained and work has commenced. It's going to be a 3 stage process: 1. Edit the scans. 2. Translate into English. 3. Convert to PDF format. Actually it's going to be bilingual, the English translations will be in an appendix at the end of the book. Included with this post is a preview of page 4. Why page 4? Page 4 has examples of various exercises. Of particular interest is ex. 71 & 72, 5 & 6 note tremolos respectively. Though the Metodo was published in 1902 it seems that by that time flamenco guitar technique was already quite developed. Enjoy!

I don't know much about Spanish copyright law, but it seems that a method published 110 years ago would no longer be subject to copyright protection.

Entering all those pieces into Guitar Pro would have been a big project. Thanks to Christian for doing that.

Guitar Pro won't open 'Leccion 13 by Rafael Marin.gpx'. It opens the other files, but something must be wrong with that one. Christian, will you check to see if the posted file is different than your original?

Is someone working on an English translation of the text?
