Converting to MP3/ How Please

Postby TomasJimenez » 26 Aug 2008, 21:22

Hola amigos,

About a year ago I found it very easy to convert files such as WMA and Wav to MP3 so that I could send them or upload them to places on the Internet.

Now it seems impossible. I have downloaded many software and tried many things but impossible.

Can anyone please tell me how to do this. I do not know why now I cannot but maybe for the day of the Magic Kings I should get a new computer!!!!

Saludos cordiales

It's very difficult I know.....but I doubt you need a new computer (unless you actually do!), you just have to look at software until you find that capacity, or go to a retailer, but I share your grief, I just wanted to burn AIF, and nothing I found for free worked until I found Deep Burner, and I'm still waiting for it to discombobulate and tell me I have to buy something.......if you are downloading freeware you may have to buy the software to get that capacity. If you are purchasing alot of useless software, I feel for you man......

Hola Gary:

Well here is the surprise: since making my message I found I had on my computer a software called Freerip and it worked immediately first time and quick, so I am happy about that. But I think I have had similar experience to you. I never buy anything until I try to free version first and for some reason they often do not work for me although I should be honest and say very few people are as bad with computers and technology as I am!
Good luck with your software.

Great! I would format everything in AIF and convert it from that. Wish you luck!

I see that you found a solution already installed on your computer. If you would like a more capable program, the $24 dBpowerAMP Audio Conversion program will convert between a variety of audio file formats including WMA and MP3. A free version also used to be available and you might be able to find it with a search, but the free version seems to have been removed from the developer's website.

Installation is a two step process.

1) Go to http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ and install the dBpowerAMP Audio Conversion program.

2) Go to http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ and install codecs for "Windows Media Audio" and any other file types you want to be able to convert between.

Audacity will load WAV and export as MP3, but you need to download an additional dll to make it do the export and I can't remember what it's called

Late edit: it's called LAME

There is a Media Converter add-on module for the FireFox web browser that is able to convert between a variety of media file formats while files are being download from the web. It even will convert video to audio files, making it possible, for example, to download YouTube videos directly to audio files that you can put on a portable audio player or burn to a CD.

Media Converter add-on installation is very simple and takes only a few seconds. It can be uninstalled just as easily.

If you use Firefox, go to Media Converter, look at the images and read the (actually short) 'Long Description.' Then click the green 'Add to Firefox' button to install the software.

Note that the Media Converter add-on is not able to convert files that are already on your computer hard disk. It only converts files being downloaded from the web from one media file type to another.
