Morón-Style Bulerías

Postby Bob » 10 May 2010, 00:28

Two or three years ago someone sent me eleven Guitar Pro 5 files containing what seem to be someone's attempt to write music for Morón-style bulerías falsetas that are similar in varying degrees to music played long ago by Diego del Gastor and others. The files do not contain the author's name or copyright notices, so I have no reason to think the author intended to claim copyrights.

Those who have Guitar Pro 5 will be able to open the gp5 files below, view the music in standard notation and cifra, play it electronically, edit it to make any desired changes, and then make hard-copy printouts if desired. I am including two other types of files for the benefit of those who do not have Guitar Pro. One is pdf files that can be opened with a pdf reader, such as Adobe Acrobat, to view or print the music in standard notation and cifra. The other is mp3 audio files, so you can hear the printed music played electronically by Guitar Pro.

Guitar Pro electronically simulates guitar sounds that are not as nice to listen to as even the sounds made by your least favorite guitar. Even so, Guitar Pro's simulated guitar-playing is valuable, because the lets users hear the exact timing and pitch of each note played exactly as written. Someone writing music can listen to be sure they wrote what they intended to write. Someone trying to play music can know exactly how it should be played even though they may not have an instructor to play it for them correctly.

Of course, in the case of music, "correctly" is a matter of opinion. The music below appears to represent someone's attempt to write music for various Morón-style bulerías falsetas. If you play it exactly as written, the note pitches and durations will be like what you hear in the mp3 audio files, only with the nicer tonal qualities of your guitar. You can decide for yourself the extent to which these are the "correct" ways to play Morón-style bulerías falsetas.

I recognize everyone of these falsetas. #5 is the famous one in Am that is the basics for the one Juan Martin has in the back of his solo book. Diego del Gastor seldom played any falseta the same twice. Every Moron style player has their own take on these falsetas for speed, phrasing, adding notes, simplifying, etc., but all stick to the basic melody. One major difference in Moron style players is they alter rhythm sections to their liking and seldom copy Diego's verbatim.

I hope some of you will work on some of these, try to make them fit into your style and then post an audio clip. I enjoy hearing what players from difference schools do with the Moron falsetas.

You will notice on number 11 toward the end similar phrasing to this one I learned off a recording of Diego.

I use a version of this falseta in my Bulerias por Solea.

Here is one I made up for a fun challenge. You will notice it resembles some of the ones Bob posted above.
Bulerias falseta challenge.mp3

Here is a simple version of #5 in Am (:03 to :17) followed by the famous one in A (:17 to :41 my simplification) then ended with some improvisational stuff (starts at :41) since I hadn't figured out the classic way to finish the famous A falseta at the time I recorded this.

PDF and various other types of computer files, including even mp3 music files, are sometimes used as vectors to send malicious computer code to unsuspecting website visitors. Because of that, depending on security settings, Internet Explorer and most other web browsers display warnings when users try to download certain types of files. If the optional security settings in your web browser are set to the default settings you may receive a warning when trying to download the files I posted above. Despite those warnings, I guarantee you that those file are completely free of malicious computer code and are perfectly safe to download.

Thanks for posting those files Bob. Can you or anyone else tell me the meaning of the word buté above the staff lines?

"Buté" is a French adjective that means to play in a stubborn, obstinate way.
