Morón-Style Soleares

Postby Bob » 01 May 2010, 22:07

I have casually tried to imitate Morón-style soleares from time-to-time with limited success. Years ago I tried to see what Diego del Gastor was doing in videos. It was easy to see some things, but it seemed that just as he would play parts I hadn't already worked-out the camera would move or something would block the view.

Recently I decided to make a more-serious effort to learn details related to the Morón style and then, hopefully, learn to play similar variations. My playing abilities have improved since my early attempts. Maybe that will help -- and maybe it won't! As most of you know, the Morón style is much more challenging to play than it sounds like it should be when listening.

I know Sam has spent a lot of time listening to and trying to play Morón-style flamenco. Have any of you written music for Morón soleares falsetas? I have music (cifra and standard notation) that someone else wrote for various portions of Morón bulerias, but nothing whatsoever for soleares.

Is it possible to get copies? I am very interested in Morón bulerías.

Here is the site that has tab for the Diego style Bulerias. I cannot get into the files, maybe you guys can. http://freetabs.org/folklore.htm

Tried downloading their tef files etc, still no luck bringing these files up. any suggestions?

Here is a video with tab on his site of a Solea that uses many falsetas taken from Diego's style. The intro isn't like anything from the Moron style, but many of the following falsetas are similar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc0L_k1bGqI

Here is one of the first falsetas I learned in 1971 when I took 3 or so lessons from a player that knew Diego. This is a great one to show how complex these "simple" Moron style falsetas really are. You will note that the starting note is actually part of the 12 count of the previous remate. This is important to get the phrasing right. I use to play it leaving this note out and just finishing the previous remate with the E1 note, but it doesn't have the same sound. You will also note it is impossible to count this one while playing. The beginning is played as triplets, but counted as quads which can be confusing. Some players attempt to write out falsetas like this showing the notes as quads, but they do not sound that way and can cause difficulty in getting the feel and phrasing correct. Note that the first falseta counts 6 and must be repeated to get the 12 count for Solea. This is common in Moron Solea and Bulerias. Moron flamenco is very hard to tab out. My playing is not the best and the strings are worn out on the Tsiorba, but hope this helps any of you trying to learn this style of flamenco. The difficulty in writing out gypsy flamenco is why the gypsy teachers like to show you in person and make you do it until it sounds right. Most of them don't talk about compas, accents, have you counting or have metronomes going, they make you learn it by sound and feel. I have never been able to take lessons from a gypsy player in person, so I have to learn by ear and watching videos. In the 70's I learned flamenco off LP's. It is very hard and slow to be your own teacher.

Here is my version of one that Dieguito (Diego's nephew) uses. Notice again that the starting note is the end of the preceding falseta count 12. My hands are really bad stiff and painful and next week the orthopedic surgeon is considering surgery. The recent problem getting worse daily is because of pinched nerves at my elbows. Thought I had better get some of this down before surgery. Playing is not the best, but maybe you can get the idea from it.

First clip is of the tab below and second clip is the falseta in the previous post combined with this falseta.

Sam, there obviously is something wrong with the first Soleá Falseta tabs you posted above (on the green paper). However, the Dieguito Soleá Falseta is fine. I wrote music for that one in Guitar Pro to make it easier to read and below have posted the Guitar Pro source file, a pdf file containing both standard notation and tabs, and an mp3 audio file containing Guitar Pro's electronically generated guitar playing emulation.

Bob, I am guessing the problem is the triplets at the first should be written as quads and the ending two notes on the remate as equal time. This makes my point about trying to accurately write note values for Moron flamenco and make it work. The Solea timing is 3/4. Try entering it again using the last 2 notes on the remate as equal time and the triplets as quads. Add ligatos in right places and it should work.

Hey, guys!
Long time no see
I have a dozen pages of parts (+tabs) for Soleares por arriba and por medio of Diego del Gastor. The only problem is that it is from a book and I guess I don't have the right to share it, do I? I will let the administrator tell me more about this point.
If you send me a private message, I can also give you the title of this book (which is the only one I could find with such a comprehensive collection of Diego's falsetas, apart from Evan Harrar's work) and how you can get it 8-) .
