Erasmo Fuentes is a self-taught guitarist who was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico in 1943. I became acquainted with him in 1964 when he moved to Provo, Utah to study sculpture at Brigham Young University and I found him playing flamenco guitar at a local Mexican restaurant. He joined the Utah Classical Guitar Society that I also belonged to at that time and even though it was a classical guitar society, a large percentage of our monthly meeting time was spent listening to and watching in amazement as Erasmo played flamenco.
He came to my place a time or two in the late 1960's, played my Ramírez, and agreed to give me lessons, but soon after that he left Utah and I lost touch with him. I heard that he went to Spain, but I have known nothing about him since.
Yesterday my brother asked if I remembered Erasmo's name. He quickly found Erasmo's sculpture website http://fuentessculpture.com/ and I quickly found YouTube videos and a variety of information on the web about him. I was surprised to learn that he currently lives about an hour and half drive south of here.
These videos are of course not all flamenco, but even so, I thought you would enjoy them. Incidentally, the Provo Tabernacle where they were recorded was destroyed by fire a few months ago.
