Farruca

Postby SamC » 17 Feb 2009, 00:25

This post is to introduce the discussion forum for the Farruca. The idea of these individual palos discussions is to create an organized archive so questions, advice, audio or video demo clips, tab or music notation, etc., can readily be found in the future. Discussions can be on guitar, vocal, or dance as long as they relate to that palo. If you have a palo you want to discuss that isn't yet posted, please email or PM any moderator.

Punta y Tacon by Sabicas is my all-time favorite instrumental Farruca. El Nino de Almaden used to sing a beautiful Farruca.

Agree with that. Jacinto Almaden sang the best Farruca I have ever heard. Here it is, accompanied by Antonio Arenas. You'll have to try to listen without being distracted by the video, which is quite funny and well done.

The music on this CD was copied from earlier disc recordings:

It contains:
11. Viva Madrid que el la corte - ' Malagueñas '
12. Al señor de la santa humildad - ' Tientos '
13. Porque tanto me consientes - ' Malagueña '

Exactly the same music was later released on another CD labeled 'Cante Flamenco Vol. III' as part of a multi-CD anthology of old flamenco cante. Both CD's are still available from various Spanish websites at low prices.

The back side of the CD pictured above states that the music was originally recorded in the 1930's, but I think that is unlikely based on the audio quality. The soft pops in the background are typical of 33 1/3 RPM disc recordings rather than of 78 RPM disc recording technology.

This is a short sample taken from near the center of the first selection:

01 Soy Piedra Y Perdi Me Centro (Short Sample).mp3

Those CD's don't include the Farruca in the YouTube video that you asked about, but even so, I thought there might be interest in them. In addition to those recordings, Jacinto Almaden can be heard together with other artists on a wide variety of other recordings that don't have his name on the front cover. This is one of many examples:

Magna Antologia Del Cante Flamenco Vol. IV
13 Carmona Tiene Una Fuente (Jacinto Almaden y Perico El Del Lunar)

I will check some of those other recordings when I have time to see if I can find the source of the Farruca.

I found that I have a lot more Jacinto Almaden recordings than I realized. The Farruca in the YouTube video seems to have been taken from El Nino De Almaden y Canalejas De Jerez, Arte Flamenco Vol. 2.

Farruca cd update .
I´ve got them now and all i can say is bloody fantastic , the version on the Arte Flamenco Vol 2 is much better than the one on Grands Cantaores Du Flamenco Vol 2 .
Any more recommendations from the Arte Flamenco series ?

Thanks
