Postby Ram » 26 Dec 2010, 21:16

Can someone give some info on Zorongo and Rondena? Are they consider individual palos?

Hola Ram
Well I understand it this way:

Zorongo is probably quite an old Andaluz folk song and being Andaluz it has something of a flamenco aire and is popular with flamenco people from time to time.
Lorca wrote the words of the song and wrote an arrangement for piano and both he has published in his works. I think he was keen to preserve Andaluz culture.
Rondeña is of course not the same as Rondeñas.
Rondeñas is a flamenco Palo a little like Verdiales and possibly of folk origin.
Rondeña they say was composed by Ramón Montoya and it has something of the feeling of Tarantas.
You can find many Rondeña on YouTube and my favourite is Paco Peña because it is so serious and dark. I play it also and my version can be heard on MySpace but it is in reality only a variation of the Montoya/ Peña composition with perhaps a few small ideas of my own.

Tomas:
Thank you, I appreciate de distinction between Rondena and Rondenas. I will certantly look for the Paco Pena's "Rondena". I have his book Toques Flamencos but unfortunatly is not cover in this book. Juan Martin does not include one either in his books El Arte Flamenco De La Guitarra.
As you can tell by my reference material I am in the beginning stages of Flamenco, eventhough I have been learning Flamenco for a couple of years my progress is slow. I am musically challange but I make up for it with determination, heck I just got the rest of my life to learn.

Ram

Hello Ram
If you are looking for a Rondena, the one by Paco Pena from the Fabulous Flamenco CD (or album) is a great one. The transcript is available from Alain Faucher. Most of it is relatively easy to play (but for me at a slower pace than Paco Penas'). Sabicas also has some good ones.
One of the things that I love about flamenco is that you can improvise so much. I will take falsetas from Sabicas and add them to the Paco Pena Rondena, re-arange the order in which I play some measures and create some of my own.
I do that with almost everything I play. Some pieces I play will have 5 or 6 different sources. Basically I "cut and paste".
Isn't flamenco great?

Hola Ed
I also find it absolutely natural to mix different falsetas and even to change and develop falsetas.
I feel that in flamenco what we are playing is a Palo and the falsetas are the elements that help us to make that Palo.
Sometimes of course it is very pleasant to play a whole piece just as we hear it on a recording for example such as the Rondeña of Paco Peña but normally I like to change things every time I play.
