74 Negra thinner top new response

Postby SamC » 13 Sep 2010, 16:28

After 36 years of a heavy varnished top and recent years weighted more with a golpeador, my homebrew 74 redwood and Jacaranda Brazilian rosewood guitar was partiality relieved. I removed the finish on the top and thinned it. The strings are new D' Addario J45 basses and La Bella 820 trebles so they sound a bit tinny, but I am amazed at the new response of this guitar, especially the bass. I hope to get it to Peter soon for some alteration on string spacing and action and also a french polish. I am also debating whether it is worth removing the damping heavy varnish off the rosewood or not, so I will wait for Peter's expertise. Listen to the basses.

Manos Lentas,

I look forward to checking out the guitar in person. What shape/outline did you use? Is that your own plantilla, or did you copy some known maker?

Peter, It was my own shape. You will notice the bottom is flat. This guitar can stand on its own on a level smooth floor. What I did is draw around a larger bodied classical on cardboard, then hold it and cut an shape it till I felt it was right for me. Then I made forms. The depth is 3 5/8 inches a bit less than some classical guitars. All my own design and bracing.
