Extra Hard Tension Strings

Postby Prominent Critic » 29 Mar 2010, 19:35

I'm thinking about an Alhambra 3F flamenco guitar. The manufacturer recommends and installs as original strings extra hard tension strings. I tried them once and quickly learned that you work twice as hard for half the sound, so I won't use them. I have also always felt that they weren't good structurally for a guitar. My question to our luthiers is – could this guitar be somehow "designed" for extra hard tension strings? Seems unlikely. In any case, what I would like to know is - if I put normal tension strings on, will if affect the structure or the sound. I'm considering three possible combinations. 1) Normal tension for both bass and treble. 2) Normal tension bass with hard tension treble. 3 ) Light tension bass with normal tension treble. Appreciate any thoughts or advice.
