Loosened Strings

Postby gitano74 » 26 Apr 2010, 15:24

Hi everybody,

I have just received my new guitar after a long shipping time. when I received the guitar I have found out that the strings were down-tuned from 2-3 whole tones prior to shipping. So the guitar has been like this for around 45 days.

do you think that the spruce top has lost part of its power in tension ? If yes what can I do to get the top to its proper tension?

thanks :)

Strings are often loosened before a guitar is shipped, because some people think it reduces the risk of damage from rough handling. Others disagree and don't think it is necessary. I don't think having the strings lose will have damaged the guitar top, but there may be some minor changes over the first few days after the strings are tightened.

Fear not. Nothing should be wrong with the top. Just tune it up to proper pitch, and keep tuning it up frequently for a good while, and everything should be okay.

It is very wise to loosen the strings with shipping on an airplane.
It can be very cold it the gargo part from a plane ( below zero celcius)
The strings will shrink, and give a lot pressure on the sundboard.

If you tune it up it will sound normall, maybe chainge in sound a bit the first time as Ramon says.
But that is normal with a new guitar, it have to get "played in"

Congratulated with the guitar! :D
