Oregon Flamenco Guitars

Postby SamC » 14 Feb 2009, 15:31

We have three outstanding flamenco guitar makers in Oregon that I know of. They all make some beautiful flamencos.

I think some are maple and some are myrtlewood. Click on his link for photos of maple and myrtlewood. He has some beautiful flamed Oregon maple. I am considering getting an Oregon maple back and sides and Port orford cedar white top with pegs from him. This one is myrtlewood http://www.stansellguitars.com/catcompletedmyrtle.htm

Here is one that is all Oregon Port Orford white cedar. Only thing I would want is a more intricate Spanish looking rosette http://www.stansellguitars.com/cat_contessa.htm

i agree that the rosette is quite simple looking. i wonder what type of tone myrtle wood produces. the all cedar guitar is an interesting concept as well. cedar is a soft wood ,no? would be it a competent wood for back and sides?

Here is a write up on Oregon Port Orford white cedar. Common names ... Hinoki, pacific white cypress, Oregon cypress, pacific white cedar. Originally grown only in southern Oregon and Northern California, Port Orford is a unique cedar species. Like all cedars, it is a member of the cypress family. It is a particularly HARD and strong cedar.

I have heard flamencos by other makers that purchased the P. O. W. C. from Standell for tops. They sounded fabulous and very traditional flamenco. I still think I prefer the Oregon straight grained maple for B & S and the white cedar "cypress" for the top.

Leo, I just received an email from Les Standell and he said he uses Port Orford white cedar for the top, B & S, and neck on his best flamencos. He says when finished the white cedar looks, has same weight, and sounds like Spanish cypress and is as strong. It makes an extremely durable top. I don't really need another guitar, but the idea of an Oregon made and mostly Oregon wood flamenco that looks and sounds flamenco is tempting.

it would be nice to have a guitar mostly made out of trees that grow within your home state and by a luthier that lives there too. i can see how it's tempting. not to mention, they look stunning. the price is very fair too.

I would like to add myself to Oregon Guitarmakers. My name is Peter Tsiorba, and you can look me up at http://www.tsiorba.com Also, a bunch of photos of my instruments can be found here:

I've built flamencas based on Barbero, Santos Hernandez, Esteso and Reyes. Materials I've used are the usual suspects, as well as woods such as Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Monterey Cypress and European maple.

Here is one of my guitars "tested" before I shipped it out:

Thank you all, and keep on playin' !!!!!

Very nice indeed! Great response with a crisp traditional flamenco sound. What was this one patterned after? Your playing is great also with a traditional flamenco feel and sound. I think I saw one of your guitars on ebay recently for a reasonable price.
