Oregon Handmade Cejillas

Postby SamC » 09 Jun 2011, 23:35

8 hours of work using hand tools only. Sawed by hand out of a 6 inch Oregon Black Locust branch that was underneath a pile of decaying firewood of 40 years. I shaped it entirely by hand using different wood rasp. It is a bit large, but works excellent. I got a bit too much taper on the peg but free-handing a peg is a challenge. The cord is a nylon shoe string and does not dent the neck, even the softest cedar. I finished it with beeswax and orange oil. I plan to make a couple more smaller and get a peg shaver and matching reamer. I plan to make the pegs from Oregon Mountain Mahogany and the body from Oregon Black Locust.

Hola Sam

I like this cejilla very much.
I like how simple it is and the beauty is from the characteristics of the wood and the natural curves, as if each curve is moving into the next curve.
The shoe lace is an interesting idea.
Please tell us more about how it is working etc and show us more photos of the next ones.
Saludos

Very nice. Also a really good picture of it on the rock.

The first one you see in the original photos had a problem with the peg holding due to taper. I received my peg shaver and taper reamer today and made 2 new pegs. The first broke due to a flaw in the grain and trying to make it to small. This one that works and holds good uses a small shoe string requiring a smaller hole in the peg which makes it stronger. I like the size, look, and feel of this one and plan to make a couple more. The white dot on top is Oregon Elk horn tip I found in the forest 35 years ago. The smaller cord doesn't seem to dent the neck and certainly works better. The shoe string cord is easily replaceable without taking the cejilla apart.

It looks better on the guitar in my opinion.

The horn is great. Nice to see it as a larger part of the piece.

The old dry Black Locust and most of the elk horn are all used and this series is finished. Each one unique and a bit crude and unsymmetrical, but they all work great and radiate that handmade ambiance. You will notice I changed where and how the lace mounts into the cejilla body. By using this angle the lace doesn't pull out and is still easy to change when it wears out. I don't have to remove the leather. They are very light, easy to use, and not fragile.

#5 experimenting with different shape and smaller peg. Peg came out different shape than I had planned due to a small flaw that required taking a bit more off the sides than I had planned. This is the last of the 40 year aged Black locust from my neighbors tree that is usable.

This last one looks best to me.

Now that you have made few, how long does it take you to make one?
