Question

Postby Victor » 27 Dec 2010, 12:13

Is the back of the guitar slightly domed like the top sound board ?
If so , all of it or just the bottom end to mirror the sound board ?
And last but not least how much do you dome the guitar ?

Thanks Victor

Victor,

Happy New Year. Backs are typically domed slightly, and the dome is usually extended all though the back, i.e. from the heel to the tailblock. Some luthiers use domed sanding forms, but traditionally, a plane can be used to introduce a slight angle to the gluing surfaces of the sides/linings. I typically dome the backs something on the order of 5mm at the tallest section of the dome.

Best regards,

Hi Peter ,

Happy New Year . Thanks for the peply .
Can you not dome the solera to achieve the the dome in the same way you would to for the sound board ?
Also does the tallest section run right through the middle ?

Best regards

Victor,

Certainly, you can make a dedicated workboard domed in a similar fashion as a soundboard workboard, except that the doming spans the entire heed to tailblock area. Or, you can just radius your back braces, and glue those to the back with flexible cauls/clamping pressure. As to the highest point, it runs along the center seam of the back, and somewhere near the waist area.
