bulerias falseta

Postby Flamencoblues » 23 Apr 2011, 17:59

While buleriandoing this morning, I particularly enjoyed playing this old-fashioned bulerias falseta. :D

Roland
Very nice, I like it. Good alzapua as well. Buleras is something I have generally stayed away from but after playing your video a few times I feel I might want to give it another try.

Ed,
Thank you very much. You should definitely give it a try, because it's so much fun to play. However, I would agree that bulerias can be difficult to approach, because no other palo has gone through as much musical transformation over the years. To break out of my ingrained Juan Martin patterns, I recently took some on-line lessons and also watched a lot of Moraito videos. ;)
Saludos

Here is another, very short, very old-style bulerias falseta, a typical picado falseta like you would hear them in the fifties in up-tempo bulerias. As introduction I added a rasgueo pattern by Manuel Morao. (I admit my hopeless infatuation with Jerez-style bulerias 8-) )
(Again, the lack of attack in my picados is due to the fact that I currently play with flesh rather than nail. :x )

Roland, Your technique is very defined and clean and the compas feels right. You definitely have the old Jerez sound and feel. Ole!!!

Ed, I find the Bulerias easier than the Soleares in some ways. A good bridge is working on the Alegrias. Also a Bulerias can be played slow and still sound great.

Thank you very much for your comment, Sam! I definitely agree with you on bulerias tempo. However, I found that matching speed and styles can be a real challenge. Early bulerias (eg, Manolo Caracol and Melchor de Marchena) were often played at intimidating tempo, whereas seventies bulerias could be really slow. However, seventies bulerias falsetas often are highly syncopated, which poses a different challenge.
