Malaguena

Postby SamC » 12 Feb 2011, 17:52

Based on ideas from Sabicas, Carlos Montoya, Juan Serrano, Vicente Saucedo, and Jose Feliciano. This is much the way I played it in the 70's. My playing was much faster and cleaner then. Why a Malaguena? Because most general audiences don't understand or appreciate a player pouring their heart out with a Siguiriyas, Solea, Bulerias, and even a Tango. I always saved it for the encore like Sabicas did on occasion if the audience showed any sincere appreciation for the other palos.

Thanks Victor and Ram.

@Ram this is played on my Tsiorba mechanical peghead maple and spruce. At about a minute in if you listen to the low E note and then going up the scale to the highest G note I play (little E string 14th fret) you can hear the growl of the basses and the sweetness of the trebles that I think is mainly the sound of the maple. The Reyes bracing has a lot to do with it, but on cypress guitars with same bracing, I don't hear as much definition in the bass growl or sweetness in the trebles. I am definitely sold on maple for traditional flamenco blancas. Also I have heard myrtlewood and Port Orford cedar flamencos that have this same quality. I think my recording rate was a bit low and would have sounded better set up a bit.

That's wonderful; and regarding speed, I much prefer a slower version.

I had to listen to this again. I was wondering if you improvised this Malagena or is a piece that you have memorized?

Ram, it is improvised based on falsetas by the masters I learned by listening. I simplified the masters classic falsetas and put my style to them. Basic and simple and I play it just for fun. It is something many recognize that don't know anything about flamenco. The basic melody is actually the first thing I learned on guitar (had an old electric Kay) from a jazz player at age 13. Here is a version with an added bass falseta after the intro.

Thanks very much for posting it. I prefer a slightly slower pace as well.
