Tarantas

Postby Flamencoblues » 23 Jul 2011, 16:21

Aficionados,
Since there seems to be no tarantas in this section, I thought I post this one, which I have been working on recently. I hope you don't mind the slightly modern intro by Ricardo Marlow (I love the gorgeous open chords) and also kindly overlook my mess-ups in Paco Pena's beautiful taranto falseta. Would love to hear your critique/comments.
Saludos,
Roland

Roland
Took me a while to find the video (on you tube)
Very nice. I like it. Quite melodic and melancholic. Lots of personal expression. Exactly what a taranta should be. Some of the falsetas sound like they have been adapted from other palos, which I think is a very flamenco technique. Many great players do that. I see you are using that triplet rasqueado again. I still have not been able to make it work.

Ed,
Thank you. :D Yes I love the triplet rasgueda. Around the 4 min mark, I use pai; at the very end of the tune, I use pei.

I am curious as to why you use the two different triplet rasqueados. Your pai is very good, (as is your pei). I have been working on pai regularly but I still sound like a three legged horse on pavement and at half the speed of my pmp. By the way if you had not mentioned mess-ups of a Paco Pena falseta I would not have noticed. It prompted me to search through my Paco Pena recordings to find that falseta. I would call it an adaptation not messed up.

Roland, very nice Taranta. I haven't practiced a Taranta for over a year. I never had any luck with any triplet rasqueado. You do them very nicely.

Ed,
I am curious as to why you use the two different triplet rasqueados.

Pai really is all you need. But I learned pei first (from Andres Batista; don't know of anybody else who uses it) and like to keep it alive. With pei I have a somewhat wider reach across all strings and get a more swiping sound. In the last chord I wanted to accentuate the high and low E-strings to fully bring out the dissonance between the root in the treble and the b9 in the bass. With pai before I was mostly striking the 4 lowest strings.
I would call it an adaptation not messed up.

Very kind of you to say that. Let's say not all adaptations were entirely intended. ;)

Thank you very much. Personally, I find the triplet rasgueado easier to play than other forms, because it requires comparatively less finger strength and stamina.
