Flamenco Dance For Beginners

Postby solendogan » 29 Aug 2008, 02:05

Hi all

This is a new thread, and welcome to all people who is interested in flamenco dance as well as the beautiful music
I hope dance teachers, students , people interested in participate and share this art form

It is a passion really
A great fitness, posture and balance
Like guitar you train your fingers , in this you train all parts of your muscles

I like to share what i learn from the dance classes about the technique
For Beginners, i recommend these:

At the beginner level is the flamenco posture

It is think like you are holding a beach ball or a egg,
the important things to remember which is hard bit is to do a hold on your stomach breathe in and hold it down
that makes you not to reach your torso:)
then the hold is correct
Always do not arch your back hips:)

Great idea to have this special board focused on dance. I know little about flamenco dance and never had the chance to accompany a dancer live, so learning some of the basics of dance helps strengthen my compas as a guitarist. Here is a link to our video section which I found to be very informative and inspirational.

I think the most important things for a beginner are posture and compas, because posture is your physical starting point for all our movements, and compas is the musical starting point. :)

Of course, compas determines a dancer's starting point only where a dancer is not first to begin. Flamenco can be begin with palmas, music, singing, or dancing and others can start in any sequence. Where it begins with dancing, a dancer starts whenever they are ready and others base their starting points partly on the compas of the dancer. Furthermore, for everyone involved, compas is not only important at their start, but also for the timings of all other rhythmic points during performance.

After posting the comments above I realized that you probably used "compas is the musical starting point" in the context of the first thing a beginning dancer should learn about the music, rather than in reference to starting a dance.

Yes. I meant everything builds off of the compas- knowing the rhythm is essential for a dancer. :)

Yes, I agree but I have seen a dancer dance Rondeña so I think that feeling the piece and expressing that with all the body is also most important.
